1. Tomakomai Experimental Forest

The Tomakomai Experimental Forest (ca. 2,700 ha) was established in 1904. The forest is located near the city of Tomakomai, 60 km from Sapporo. Twenty five percent of the forest is a plantation, and the rest is a natural, broad-leaved forest. The forest’s soil is made up of volcanic ashes from Mt. Tarumae, which freezes during the winter season. Rivers from natural springs flow through the forest, creating a large wetland. Research focusing on the mechanisms in maintaining biological communities, the interaction between forests and rivers, the improvement of the conservation of genetic resources, and the multipurpose utilization of forests is conducted on site. This forest is popular with Tomakomai citizens as a place for meditation and spiritual renewal.

2. Lake Utonai

This area is rich in nature, especially with wild birds; about 270 species have been recorded spotted at the lake, which is about half of the bird species recorded in Japan so far. The number of geese, ducks and swans that stop here during their spring and autumn migrations, sometimes reach tens of thousands in number, in a single day. Among the species listed in the "Law for the Conservation of Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora" by the Ministry of Environment, the Canada Goose, Oriental Stork, Northern Goshawk, White-tailed Eagle, Steller's Sea Eagle, Peregrine Falcon and Red-crowned Crane have been confirmed as sighted here.
